Sony turns on PlayStation network for first time since hacking scandal

SONY started restoring its PlayStation online network yesterday, three weeks after a security breach leaked 77m customers’ personal data to hackers.

Sony switched on the network for players in the US yesterday, with other countries returning to the gaming service over the next two weeks.

The company insisted that it has beefed up its online data security since the hack, and is offering customers free premium content as compensation for the down-time.

“While we understand the importance of getting our services back online, we did not rush to do so at the expense of extensively and aggressively testing our enhanced security measures. Our consumers’ safety remains our number one priority,” said Kazuo Hirai, Sony’s executive deputy president.

Gamers and security experts had criticised Sony for its handling of the incident, which sparked lawsuits and cast a shadow over its flagship online gaming network.

The police are still investigating the hack, which Sony blamed on internet collective Anonymous, though the group has denied involvement.

Kevin-Prince Boateng’s delightful Michael Jackson routine

Back in December, strange reports from the Milan dressing room emerged about new addition Kevin-Prince Boateng, with his neck tattoos and fiery temper, doing exceptional Michael Jackson routines behind closed doors. "Boateng has a very beautiful voice," Massimo Oddo said. "He also knows how to dance," Mario Yepes added. "Kevin's specialty is the moonwalk."

At the time, it seemed no one outside the dressing room would ever get to see this hidden talent, but last month, Boateng promised to share it with the public if Milan won the Serie A title. Well, they did it and, after Milan's 4-1 win over Cagliari at the San Siro, so did he.

With the stadium lights dimmed and a spotlight on a make-shift dance floor featuring the Scudetto itself in one corner, "Billie Jean" played over the sound system as a man in Michael Jackson outfit emerged with a fedora pulled down over his face. He knew the moves and, for a 6'1" 190 lbs. footballer, he pulled them off pretty well, with the moonwalk being the highlight.

When he finished his routine, pulled off his hat and let out one of his primal screams to fully reveal his identity, his cheering teammates surrounded him as the crowd voiced their approval. With silverware being handed out across Europe these last few weeks, we've seen a lot of great celebrations, but nothing like this. Maybe next year he'll do an Elvis routine. Or a Miley Cyrus.

West Ham sack Avram Grant

West Ham United manager Avram Grant paid the price for a dismal season when the club announced the Israeli's departure soon after they were relegated from the Premier League.

West Ham, set to move to the Olympic stadium after the 2012 Games, will start next season in the second tier of English football after a last-gasp 3-2 defeat at Wigan Athletic left them marooned at the foot of the table.

"The club can confirm that Avram Grant is no longer the manager of West Ham United," read a Hammers statement.

West Ham said first-team coach Kevin Keen will take charge of their final match of the season at home to Sunderland on Sunday.

The Londoners have won just seven league games in accumulating 33 points from 37 matches and now face the prospect of losing top players like Scott Parker, Carlton Cole and Thomas Hitzlsperger.

"It's a very sad day, for me personally... sorry for the supporters, who were amazing, and a great club," Grant told Sky Sports soon after the Wigan defeat, unaware of his impending departure.

"I came here with a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of passion... I came here knowing about the financial problems, that the team fought against relegation last year.

"We believed that we could do something good this weekend but I'm sad we couldn't do it, not just for me but also the other people around the club... I'm very sorry for them."

Former Chelsea, Portsmouth and Israel boss Grant was appointed West Ham manager on a four-year contract in June last year, replacing Gianfranco Zola who was sacked after two seasons in the job.

Grant, who resigned as Portsmouth manager in May last year following their Premier League relegation, faced an uphill battle with West Ham right from the start, his new side losing their first four league games.

Co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan reaffirmed their commitment to Grant in January after intense media speculation surrounding his future and West Ham rallied briefly from mid-February to mid-March.

They picked up eight points from 12, including home wins over Liverpool and Stoke City and draws with West Bromwich Albion and Tottenham Hotspur, but then five successive defeats, followed by a home draw with relegation-threatened Blackburn and defeat by Wigan meant there was no way back.

Manchester City 1-0 Stoke City (FA Cup Final)

Manchester City claimed their first piece of silverware for 35 years as Yaya Toure’s second half strike gave Roberto Mancini’s side a 1-0 win over Stoke City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Toure pounced to slam home an emphatic finish in the 74th minute to breach Stoke’s obdurate defence and give City their first trophy since 1976.

The Cup victory provided the proverbial icing on the cake for Mancini’s side, who clinched their primary objective of delivering a top-four finish for a Champions League spot next season, while it sealed a memorable day for the city of Manchester after United won the Premier League title.

United win 19th league title

Manchester United clinched a record 19th league championship as Wayne Rooney's penalty gave them a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers.

Rooney converted nervelessly to equalise on 73 minutes after Paul Robinson had brought down Javier Hernandez.

Brett Emerton had given Rovers a 20th-minute lead at Ewood Park as Steve Kean's men produced a tireless team performance that gave the new Premier League champions a real fright.

But Rooney sent Robinson the wrong way to propel United past Liverpool as the most successful club in English league history, while securing a 12th title for Sir Alex Ferguson and Ryan Giggs.

Next weekend's season finale at home to Blackpool now offers Ferguson the chance to rest some players ahead of the Champions League final against Barcelona. He can also take satisfaction in the fact he has not only knocked Liverpool off their perch, but also upstaged neighbours Manchester City's participation in the FA Cup final.

United finish the season having won just five of 19 away games in the Premier League, but made a decent start. The visitors enjoyed copious possession, and might have led on four minutes when Nani's header shook the crossbar following a Rooney cross.

However, Rovers came into it, making more of their scant possession and nearly going in front through Christopher Samba, who sliced a volley over on 11 minutes.

Tomasz Kuszczak replaced the rested Edwin van der Sar in goal for United, and the unfortunate Pole demonstrated exactly what United will be missing when the Dutchman retires at the end of the season.

Twice in the first half Kuszczak was extremely lucky to escape unpunished after dawdling on the ball and getting caught in possession.

But there was no reprieve when he went walkabout in search of a chip from Emerton that scooted to the left-hand side of the box.

Though Kuszczak returned to his goal, the goalkeeper's impromptu excursion visibly unsettled a defence that left Emerton unmarked to sweep the ball in left-footed when it came back into the area.

Hernandez and Rooney showed some good interplay, but Rovers closed down ferociously, denying United time on the ball. Phil Jones and Samba put their bodies on the line, while Michel Salgado hassled Nani to distraction.

Hernandez nearly converted a half-chance when he wrapped his left-foot around the ball 25 yards out and brought a good save from Robinson, but otherwise United chances were at a premium.

Blackburn continued their memorable rearguard action into the second half, prompting Ferguson to sacrifice a defender, Fabio, when he brought Paul Scholes off the bench.

But Rovers continued to pose a threat, and Jonas Olsson rattled the woodwork with a header that gave Kuszczak no chance.

United's moment finally came when Hernandez chased a long ball down the left channel and touched the ball just before Robinson upended him.

Referee Phil Dowd consulted his linesman as both sides surrounded him, then pointed to the spot, satisfied that contact has taken place with the ball still in play.

It was a good decision, and a rash piece of goalkeeping from Robinson, with Hernandez running the ball out for a goal kick.

After Rooney found the corner of the net, the latter stages were something of a damp squib, with both sides happy to settle for a point - though wins for Blackpool and Wolves mean Rovers are not safe yet.

United got the job done despite a sub-par performance - the perfect metaphor for a season in which they have rarely sparkled, but emerged as deserving champions thanks to their determination and consistency.

Inter Milan captain Javier Zanetti was delighted completing 1,000 games as a pro this week.

The 37 year old Argentine appeared in Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw with Roma which allowed them to set up the May 29 date with Palermo.

“It was a moving evening,” he stated.

“I thank everyone, starting with my wife Paula and my children who were in the stands.

“Tonight’s match, a special one but also a difficult one, was important in every sense and for that I can really celebrate.

“It was a difficult tie, as they always are against Roma, a team with players who can change the game. But we did very well to manage the match.

“We really wanted to win it and I think we deserved to go through to play Palermo in the Final.

“We were unable to wrap the tie up early, but we knew Roma would come back strongly looking for goals. We defended well.”

Man City earn Champions League tilt for first time

Manchester City clinched a top-four finish in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday and secured at least a place in the Champions League qualifiers next season.

A 30th-minute own goal by Spurs striker Peter Crouch handed City victory to give Roberto Mancini's expensively assembled side their first crack at the Champions League and end Tottenham hopes of another season in Europe's elite competition.

The feat, achieved with a dogged display against a Spurs side who dominated possession, provides a boost before Saturday's FA Cup final against Stoke City, where the Manchester side will be aiming to win their first trophy for 35 years.

It was sweet revenge for City, who were pipped to a Champions League playoff place by Spurs when they lost 1-0 to them at home a year ago and poetic justice for the Eastlands faithful as it was Crouch who scored the winner that day.

Tennis: Li Na: Dropping husband a good move

Li Na's recent decision to appoint Denmark Fed Cup captain Michael Mortensen as her new coach was the right move despite the fact it meant ditching her husband Jiang Shan, the world number six said.

The Australian Open runner-up endeared herself to the Melbourne crowd in January by declaring she would love her husband-cum-coach even if he was "fat and ugly".

Three months later, however, the Chinese player decided to start afresh with Mortensen and the pair made a promising start to their tennis alliance when she reached the semi-finals of last week's Madrid Open.

"I don't care what other people think. My confidence was low and I felt I had to change my coach," Li told Reuters at the Italian Open.

"After Melbourne I didn't do well and if you don't do well you don't have confidence."

Li suffered four straight first-round defeats before making Mortensen her new coach.

"The relationship has been good. We're communicating well and he's told me to trust myself," said the 29-year old.

"I'm not a young player so I know my body and what I can do on the court. We are focusing more on the mental side as I feel I need someone to support me."

Seeded four in Rome, Li will start her campaign against Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino who came through a three-set match against Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova on Monday.

"I want to be among the top players at the end of a tournament but I never put pressure on myself," said Li who was beaten by Belgian Kim Clijsters in the Australian Open final.

"Melbourne was good but it was just one tournament. Of course when you do well it's not easy because the fans expect you to reach the final every time.

"But I'm learning to concentrate and set my own goals."

After becoming China's first singles grand slam finalist, Li was expected to become an overnight celebrity at home but she said little had changed in her day-to-day life since her Melbourne exploits.

"There have been lots of new courts built in Beijing but ... tennis is not a big sport in China," she said. "I've hardly been home ... but I did notice I'm recognised a bit more now especially by younger people.

"I get asked to sign autographs but really not that much has changed. I like this life."

Husband Jiang may be thousands of miles away now but the Chinese couple who entertained crowds at the Australian Open will soon be reunited.

"What do I want to do after my tennis career is over?," she asked, breaking into a smile. "Be a housewife and look after my family."

Has Apple's iPad finally killed the Netbook?

Has any of you own an iPad or the Netbook?

It's hard to believe that before 2007, a low-cost laptop was one that came in under $1,000. But that was before the Netbook revolution kicked off, inspired by the Intel Classmate and the One Laptop Per Child XO, and spearheaded initially by Asus and its original Eee PC (which had a 7-inch display and ran Linux). From that point on, every PC maker was forced (some more reluctantly than others) to embrace this new subgenre, and Netbooks were everywhere.

Until, like all fads, the Netbook burned out. Part of the reason was clearly Apple's iPad, which became the new go-to entry-level computing device for people who either didn't need or want a full PC, or just wanted a reasonably priced travel device for e-mail and Web surfing. The iPad itself has kicked off a gold rush of sorts, with the same companies that pushed countless me-too Netbooks onto store shelves now doing the same with touch-screen slates (perhaps we'll look back on this a year or two from now as the Tablet Bubble).

But the real reason Netbooks have fallen by the wayside is that they failed to evolve. After the first couple of generations, Netbooks settled into a comfortable niche of a 10.1-inch display, 1GB to 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and Windows (first XP, then Windows 7 Starter or Home Premium). You could get this basic combo for as little as $299, but some companies would charge more for upgrades such as nicer designs, rugged bodies, 3G antennas, or occasionally a higher-resolution display. But performance-wise, you'd usually be hard-pressed to tell the difference between a $299 Netbook and a $450 one.

The most recent Netbooks have almost all moved to the latest version of Intel's Atom processor, the dual-core N550, but in both our benchmark tests and anecdotal use, it hasn't been a huge step past the older models with the single-core Atom N450, adding to the feeling that today's Netbooks weren't much of an upgrade over the ones from a year or two ago.

In the meantime, larger laptops have made huge leaps, especially with Intel's second-generation Core i-series platform, which has boosted performance and battery life across the board. And 11-inch ultraportables with AMD's Fusion E-350 CPU have created a new market for laptops that provide relatively good performance and battery life, often for less than $500 (these systems arguably evolved from the handful of larger 11-inch Netbooks we'd seen over the years).

To be sure, many PC makers still have a Netbook or two in their lines, and even offer occasional updates and upgrades, but they're not being pushed like they used to. Sony, for example, has dropped Netbooks entirely from its Vaio line. Netbooks have definitely fallen off a cliff, but the question is, just how far?

    Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung mobile phone supplier sources reported that the company is preparing the next generation of mobile phones latest S series Galaxy, Samsung Galaxy S III to continue the success of previous S Galaxy series.

The presence of Samsung’s latest generation of this S Galaxy may be to compete with Apple’s iPhone 5, which reportedly will also soon be released to the market in September that will come. Apple’s new device is said to improve standards in communication and performance of existing mobile, although it remains to be seen how many innovations that exist when compared with some of the latest Android devices out there.

For now Samsung itself has not revealed its 3D-enabled smartphone, and is certainly contrary to the pesainganya such as LG and HTC that had already done. It may be that presence Samsung Galaxy S III will be the first smartphone-enabled 3D mainly due to have resemblance with the name it bears. Unfortunately, there has been no official confirmation about it.

Tennis-Djokovic stuns clay king Nadal in Madrid final

    * Serb grinds out 32nd win of the year, sixth title

    * Nadal beaten on clay for the first time in 38 matches

A relentless Novak Djokovic dethroned clay king Rafa Nadal on the Spaniard's home soil and maintained his extraordinary season when he stunned the world number one 7-5 6-4 to win the Madrid Masters title on Sunday.

The Serbian second seed ground down the local favourite and defending champion during a succession of ferocious rallies to record his 32nd consecutive win of a defeat-free 2011, the best season start since John McEnroe's 42-match streak in 1984.

The defeat marked Nadal's first reverse on his beloved clay in 38 matches since he fell to Robin Soderling in the fourth round of the 2009 French Open and denied him a third title on the red dirt in under a month after he won back-to-back at the Monte Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open in April.

Djokovic, who had never beaten Nadal on clay in nine previous attempts, now has six titles this year, including the Australian Open and the Masters in Indian Wells and Miami, where he beat Nadal in both finals.

The question now is whether the 23-year-old can carry the momentum into the French Open later this month, the only one of the four grand slams played on clay where champion Nadal has claimed five of the past six crowns.

"First of all to Rafa bad luck today," Djokovic said after collecting his winners trophy and 590,000 euros ($824,200) first prize. "It's always a big challenge to play you, you are a great champion. Hopefully we can have many more matches."

F1: Vettel out of reach for now

Mark Webber says second place in the Turkish Grand Prix was the maximum he could have hoped for, conceding team-mate Sebastian Vettel is on top of his game right now.

The Australian finished over eight seconds behind Vettel, who went on to score his third victory in four races, from which he had always started from pole.

Webber admitted he could have had a better shot had Nico Rosberg not passed him at the start, but he conceded second was the best possible result.

"I got the maximum I could actually," said Webber. "It would have been difficult to beat Seb. It would have been easier if I was ahead of Rosberg. Nico is doing his race, fair enough, but he could have made a cleaner move initially. In the end the result is as it deserves to be, I think."

The Red Bull driver said it was Vettel's rivals responsibility to push him into making errors.

"He is on top of his game. He's had a great start to the season and he is near to his maximum. It's not ideal for the rest of us, but it is up to us to to bring that to the end sooner rather than later.

"Everyone has weaknesses, and it is up to you to interrogate those as much as you can. Seb has done a good start, and the team has done a great job so that is it."

    Ferguson hails 'brilliant' United

Managerial reaction from Sunday's Premier League fixtures, with Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson claimed it was "fantastic to be the most successful team in the country" after their 2-1 victory over Chelsea moved them to within one point of a record-breaking 19th title.

Alex Ferguson: "We could've scored six in the second half, but we expected a tough game and we got a tough game. We were brilliant - we got a great start but (Chelsea goalkeepr Petr) Cech made some fantastic saves. When we gave the ball away for their goal, we were a bit nervy but the fans helped us."

"It's fantastic to be the most successful team in the country. The minute we won that first title in 1992 the door opened, and we've been involved in the first two all throughout that period - it's a fantastic achievement. For the last 17 or 18 years it's been Arsenal and Chelsea as our nearest challengers, and the last few years it's been Chelsea. Arsenal made a great attempt this year but them losing today has finalised it. We deserve the title and hopefully we'll get that point now."

Carlo Ancelotti: "In the first minute we lost the game, we started so badly. It was very difficult after that to come back and try to win. The second half was better but United played better and deserved to win. We have to accept the defeat, today United were better and in general this season they were better than us. They deserve to win title, they will win and we have to try to maintain second place."

F1: Schumi gutted at lack of pace

Michael Schumacher admitted that he was hugely disappointed to qualify only eighth on the grid for the Turkish Grand Prix, having shown strong pace in the final practice session on Saturday morning.

The Mercedes driver ended up recording a lap more than a second slower than that of his team-mate Nico Rosberg in Q3 - who starts from third on the grid – having matched Sebastian Vettel's pace during P3.

Schumacher said afterwards that he was mystified as to where the laptime had gone during qualifying.

"I'm not happy at all, being so far off, that's a bit unusual," he told the BBC. "It didn't really work out at all. The grip for whatever reason wasn't there compared to what I had this morning.

"I struggled already in Q2. The track certainly was better than it was this morning, but we couldn't reproduce what we did this morning. So, we need to understand what's going on.

"The more I pushed, the more things went wrong, and in the end there was no grip left."

    Fletcher can bring down Barcelona?

    Can Fletcher bring down Barca?

Judging by his teamsheet last night, Sir Alex Ferguson turned his attention to Barcelona long before a shadow Manchester United side finished off Schalke at Old Trafford.

Ferguson has just over three weeks in which to ponder this: what does he have to do to ensure his team are not humiliated again in the manner they were the last time these two sides met in the final, in 2009.

Back then, there were many - me included - who thought United's victory against Arsenal in the semi-final pointed the tactical route to victory. Particularly in the away leg at the Emirates, Ferguson's side had given a masterclass in counter-attacking, breaking at pace to unhinge the Gunners back line. Barcelona proved to be less generous opponents and United were brushed aside with an ease that bordered on the contemptuous. Mind, a best-of combo gleaned from the ranks of Brazil 1970, Milan 1989 and Real Madrid 2002 would have struggled. Some of Barca's possession football that night was so good it was impossible to see how they might be beaten.

But if Ferguson - a student of history - is looking for clues, he could do worse than go back into his own club's past, to the last time United contested a European Cup final at Wembley, when they played Benfica. It was - by all accounts - not a great game 41 years ago. Scrappy, tetchy, nervy, both teams seemed quickly drained by the fierce humidity of a baking hot early summer's evening. But what was notable about United's tactical approach was how it was based around shackling their opponents' best player. Although by then past his peak, Eusebio was still reckoned to be, after Pele, the finest in the world. Pace, power, athleticism: he had it all. Plus a clinical eye for goal. So United's manager Matt Busby assigned Nobby Stiles to do a man-to-man job on the Portuguese with David Sadler doubling up on him when necessary.

Stiles in particular relished the role. He had done precisely that for England in the World Cup semi-final two summers previously. And he set about his work with snarling tenacity, only once letting his opponent out of his sights. Mind, it was a dangerous moment. With five minutes to go and the scores level, Eusebio found himself one-on-one with United's keeper Alec Stepney. Stiles, blinking myopically from the halfway line, could only watch as his rival bore down on goal. Fortunately for Stiles, Eusebio blasted the ball straight at Stepney, who found the ball lodged in his midriff. In a show of considerable sportsmanship, the Portuguese generously applauded the goalie for his effort. A relieved Stiles continued his duties through extra time to help steer United to victory.

It would be a woeful underestimate of a Barcelona team way more elevated than that Benfica to suggest they could be similarly defeated by simply taking one man out of the game. But the fact remains, even if a successful marking job alone cannot guarantee that one of the several other supreme talents of the Barca team will not come to the fore, unless Ferguson can find a way to stop Lionel Messi he has no chance.

Which is why he will have been so relieved to welcome Darren Fletcher back last night. Struck down by a virus, Fletcher has been missing from United's ranks for the past few weeks. In truth, such is the nature of his work, there are not many who noticed he was gone. But Ferguson knows - especially with Owen Hargreaves incapacitated - he has few in his squad as capable of man-marking Messi as Fletcher. Remember the Scotland captain absented himself from such duty last time by getting sent off at the Emirates. And with no one else to take on the job, Messi was allowed to run free, embarrassing United's centre-backs by even having the audacity to score with his head.

Fletcher would dog his every step, harry and hare at him, running him into parts of the pitch where he can no longer act as such an effective conduit to passing movements. Sure, there's still Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets and David Villa to worry about. But with Messi diminished, even they would not be able to conjure up the passing patterns with quite the same ease they showed in '09. Fletcher on Messi has to be the start of any tactical planning to subdue the Catalans.

And it also leads to this unexpected conclusion: with this in mind, Darren Fletcher has claim to be reckoned United's most important player ahead of the final. Who would have thought that?

    Tennis-Nadal thumps Baghdatis

    * Nadal brushes aside Baghdatis

    * Djokovic still unbeaten this year after ousting Anderson

    * Murray drops second set but comes through against Simon (adds Nadal quotes, Murray-Simon result)

World number one Rafa Nadal began his quest for a third clay title in less than a month with a 6-1 6-3 drubbing of unseeded Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in the Madrid Open second round on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old Spaniard, who won back-to-back tournaments in Monte Carlo and Barcelona last month, did not face a single break point on his serve and converted his first match point when he whipped a trademark forehand winner down the line.

The victory took his record on the red dust since 2005 to 187 wins and only six defeats and set up a last-16 meeting against Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro.

The resurgent former world number four and 2009 U.S. Open champion dismissed Croat Marin Cilic 6-3 6-0 as he continued his comeback from a wrist injury.

Nadal said he would have preferred not to meet the powerful Del Potro so early in the tournament, who has shot back up the rankings to 32 from as low as 485 at the end of January after his victory last week in Estoril.

"It's one of those matches you can win or lose and anything could happen," Nadal said.

"I will try to play at my top level, aggressively and with more intensity," the Mallorca native added.

"It's also true that I am coming into the match in good form and I will try to maintain that.

"We will see who wins but the winner will take away a lot of confidence for the rest of the tournament I think."

Champions League - Ferguson 'vindicated' by rotation win

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said he felt "vindicated" after his second string thrashed Schalke to move into the Champions League final.

United cruised to a 4-1 win, making it 6-1 on aggregate, despite making nine changes from the first leg.

Ferguson admitted that he had a sleepless night over whether he had made the right decision to rest his stars ahead of the Premier League clash with Chelsea this weekend, but praised his men for making light work of the Germans.

"They did me proud," he told ITV1. "It was a semi-final and the fact it's such an important game does create a bit of doubt in your mind of 'Am I doing the right thing?' but I'm glad we were vindicated.

"It's fantastic for the club. We're where we want to be.

"I've said many times we should have done better in Europe over the years and I think this team can win the cup."
United will face Barcelona at Wembley on May 28, in a rematch of the 2009 final, which the Catalan side won 2-0.

Apart from one chance for Jefferson Farfan and Jurado's goal, Schalke never threatened but will take some comfort from the fact they still looked more convincing than last week.

"We have to admit we possibly could have gone out in earlier rounds... but we came to our level this evening," Schalke coach Rangnick said.

"The quality of the (United) players certainly stands out.

Berbatov, Anderson and (the) two central defenders - most Bundesliga sides would be happy to have that sort of quality in their teams."
